Tre anni dopo l'uscita di "Between dog and wolf", il suo ultimo album in studio (che nel 2014 era stato seguito da un album metà live e metà studio, "Between wine and blood"), la rock band britannica dei New Model Army torna sulle scene con questo "Winter", prodotto ancora una volta dal frontman Justin Sullivan insieme a Joe Baresi (già collaboratore, tra gli altri, dei Queens of the Stone Age).

Il disco è il quattordicesimo della carriera dei New Model Army, che per bocca del frontman Sullivan lo descrivono come un album che "ha un'identità veramente forte". Rispetto a "Between dog and wolf", questo nuovo lavoro dei New Model Army suona più come un album di una band: perde il sound raffinato che aveva caratterizzato il precedente disco di Sullivan e soci e recupera, per certi versi, l'aggressività dei primi lavori del gruppo.

"Winter" è una raccolta di canzoni potente: si passa dall'epico brano di apertura "Beginning" fino all'intensa "After something", canzone che chiude il disco - sono i due pezzi più rappresentativi dell'intero lavoro.
