Welcome to The Double R Club's 8th Birthday Party, a celebration of 8 years mystery & nightmares inspired by the films of DAVID LYNCH ; a darkly surreal cocktail of "Damn fine" Cabaret & Comedy & Live Music, where

"Restless nights and uneasy dreams go with the territory..."

Your aberrant host BENJAMIN LOUCHE introduces

*THE* UNDERGROUND CULT CABARET PHENOMENON

A dark and troubling cabaret dream from another place, it takes inspiration directly or indirectly from David Lynch's air of mystery and nightmare, all served with humour "Black, like midnight on a moonless night…"

Think the finger-clicking jazz ambience of cult TV show Twin Peaks,

the absurdist monochrome machine world of Eraserhead...

From the dark underbelly of Mulholland Drive,

to the surreal small-town madness of Blue Velvet,

this is an evening of 'damn fine' Lynchian cabaret of mystery and nightmares from the deepest river of your dreams…

APPEARRING THIS TIME:

LILI LA SCALA

a voice from the coal-black cellar of your heart, a voice both lulling and lachrymose...

RUTH LESS

Is she starlet or harlot? Disfigured beauty or a strange new form of the physical ideal...?

LYDIA DARING

a thing stirs in our dream-maze, a thing roused by the death of an icon and hungry for art-ritual murder!

HEAVY METAL PETE

Echoes of a special agent escaped from darkness and confusion, but who remains...?

BRIDPORT DAGGER

"Listen to the sounds" with this mournful and malign musical outfit from "another place"...

KICKMOUSE

Anthropomorphic 'thing' runs amok, performs impossible feats, delves into mystery...

KHESKI KOBLER

The inanimate becomes animate! Walks forth to illuminate your dark dreams!

PLUS

Birthday cake! Agent Cooper cocktail! Party hats! Party Gifts! Games and Donuts!

We walk, in dreams, with you…

"London can't claim too many shows with the impressive longevity and sheer depravity of the RR Club" -The Londonist

"One of the edgiest nights in the capital." -The Independent

"You may be tickled in your most shameful fancies. You may be deeply offended. But you won't look away. Mad, bad and regrettable to miss: that pretty much summarises The Double R Club." - This Is Cabaret

ALASKALSKA- EP RELEASE PARTY

-------------------------------

Rockfeedback presents: ALASKALASKA

ALASKALASKA are an art-pop 6-piece from London. They make beautiful, groove-laden music that seamlessly blends jazz, disco, funk and R&B into a bold and playful sound uniquely their own; synthetic beats play alongside live drums, delayed guitars and shimmering saxophones to create something musically rich and delightfully intricate.

Band leader and principle vocalist Lucinda twists brooding and introspective lyrics - akin to the words of Arthur Russell - into infectious melodies reminiscent of Warpaint, Dirty Projectors or Talk Talk, which demand repeat listens and could as easily soundtrack a wistful evening alone as they could a party. They've built a cult following and reputation as extraordinary performers through a handful of low-key London shows.

'Bitter Winter', the lead track from their debut EP, and 'Familiar Ways', are the perfect introduction to their brand of off-kilter pop.

'Bitter Winter' / 'Familiar Ways' is released via House Anxiety / Marathon Artists on Monday 22nd May - full EP coming summer 2017.

Join us for a

Mini Matsuri of Japan-A-Go-Go good times

with Frank Chickens and friends bringing a joyful night of live music, fun performance and late drinking in the atmospheric surroundings of the legendary Bethnal Green Working Mens club. From Japan via Tottenham over to Bethnal Green its a real

East meet East occasion!
An evening of the joyful, the serious and mostly the absurd!
Yeah but who is on you ask? well lets see....:
FRANK CHICKENS
Frank Chickens initially found fame in the late 80’s as a kimono & cardboard clad duo scoring a hit with the classic single “We are Ninja - No Geisha!” they toured the world with the likes of Billy Bragg & The Smiths, a Channel 4 series followed with a Perrier nomination at Edinburgh festival not far behind. Ninja Tunes released a remix album of Chickens favourites, Universal featured them on a best selling compilation and thanks to Stewart Lee's drunken late night internet rant Frank Chickens recently found themselves the unexpected but deserving winners of The Edinburgh Festival Comedy Gods Award!
The Chickens are no longer a duo having hatched and grown to now number an average of 14 members, often more! with songs, stories, costume changes, video visuals and a cast of thousands (well, there's a lot of them now anyway) they are as joyful & fun as ever!
But why are they called Frank Chickens? well they are named after a Japanese pencil which founder member Kazuko Hohki found during a holiday in Tokyo! Strange but true....

HIBIKI ICHIKAWA and AKARI MOCHIZUKI
Don't miss a rare performance of traditional Japanese music in the Uk from these two masters of the art.
Hibiki is a player of the Tsugaru Shamisen, a traditional 3-stringed Japanese instrument rarely heard in Europe.
Akari is a Japanese Enka & Minyo folk singer from Yamaguchi prefecture.
They have played for the Emperors birthday in the past but now they play for you coz you're just as important!
www.akarisinger.com
http://www.hibikishamisen.com/

KAMURA OBSCURA
Live music from these guys! founder member Atsuko started out in Mizutama Shobodan (Polkadot Fire Brigade) one of Japan's first all female punk bands. Now she incorporates Enka, Chanson, vocal improvisation into the sound of this Japan/uk combo.
http://www.kamuraobscura.com/

K- BEAT
Get your Beat-Takeshi on!
With the Korean drummers of SOAS... POW!

RICHARD DEDOMENICI
Mr. Dedomenici shall be your host for the night - He shall be the Godzilla Of Goodness! Grrrr!
When not being Godzilla with a mic he is an artist who makes work that’s social, joyful, topical and political - although rarely simultaneously.
He specialises in urban-absurdist interventions! Cos someones gotta do it!

Oh and we are very pleased to also be able to show you the first ever screening of a beautiful new Japanese short animation at this Mini Ura night as well!

Live stuff starts from 9pm so don't dilly dally!

The Matsuri party carries on until 2am!

With your Monkey Stompin' DJ's for the night playing vinyl sounds to bop and stroll, stagger and stomp to:

D.J. GAIKOKUCHAN-MAN
Soundtracking the early part of the evening with vintage Showa period records randomly selected from a collection hunted out in the flea markets of Edo while working with Fuji Rock Festival. Perfect listening for a start of the night sake! Kanpai!
D.J. TOSHI TOSHI - THE EDO EMPRESS
Taking us into the Floating World of the night with a fine selection of East meets West vintage vinyl sounds from the Rock to the Roll and the Ska to the Enka!

See you there and remember "YOU ARE NINJA! - NO GEISHA!"

COMMUNION PRESENTS....

MATTHEW AND THE ATLAS

Matthew Hegarty (AKA Matthew And The Atlas) is a British songwriter and multi-instrumentalist and was the first artist to be signed to Communion.

After the dreamy and textured Americana of his To The North and Kingdom of Your Own EPs had built him a cult global following, Hegarty released the debut album Other Rivers in April 2014, prompting Q to call him "the British Bon Iver".

Recorded in East Nashville with Brian Holl and Eric Hillman from Foreign Fields, His latest album, Temple (22.04.16) is a cathartic expression of its writer's own fears and feelings. New parenthood inevitably colours Hegarty's perspective on the world – a world whose natural wonders seem terminally threatened by the relentless march of technology and apparent human advancement.

The "black figure" (the nebulous being that first appeared to him after he was near fatally stabbed in an attack) returns from Other Rivers to again loom over parts of Temple, and throughout the album its protagonists seem to be striving, aching even, to find their place in amongst it all. But ultimately there's hope in the darkness; redemption to be found in honest human relationships.

The album's themes inspired Hegarty to team up with photographer friend Dave Watts. The pair travelling alone to various remote locations across Cornwall and Somerset, with Watts shooting Hegarty in the wilderness, a tiny figure moving through a vast, desolate landscape - a small man in a big world.
