Kjartan Ólafsson Composer Kjartan Olafsson (1958) graduated 1984 from the Reykjavík College of Music with a Bachelor of Music degree in composition. He continued his studies in Utrecht in Holland, Institute of Sonology, where he concentrated on electronic music, and later at the Sibelius Academy in Finland where his composition teachers were Einojuhani Rautavaara and Paavo Heininen (computer music).Kjartan received his Licentiate of Music diploma (PhD) from the Sibelius Academy in 1995. Since 1988 Kjartan has worked on the computer program, CALMUS (Calculated Music 1988-2006), which is specially designed for the composition of contemporary music. Among works composed via CALMUS are: A piece for solo flute, a clarinet trio, a work for classical guitar and live electronics, music for chamber orchestra and pieces for symphony orchestra. Kjartan presently works as a composer, teacher, producer of the music festival ErkiTíð, and a developer of CALMUS. He is the president of the ISCM - Icelandic Section and is the chairman of the Society of Icelandic Composers
