The Ministry of the Georgia Mass Choir began in 1983 in Macon, Georgia, where the Choir was organized by Rev. Milton Biggham, where over 600 singers from Atlanta, Augusta, Macon, Savannah, Thomasville and other Georgia cities turned out for the first rehearsal, ranging in age from 13 through 70. The road to the choir's success in gospel is paved by eleven nationally released albums that have earned them two Grammy nominations, three Stellar nominations, A Dove nomination and a Gospel Music Workshop of America Excellence award. With appearances like their 1997 performance on Ebony's 50th Year "Celebrating The Dream" Anniversary and at the 1996 Olympic Games, as well as the 2000 NFL Super Bowl, The Georgia Mass Choir affectionately known as “America's Choir” has become one of the most in-demand choirs throughout the country when it comes to concert ministries and guest appearances. The Georgia Mass Choir also holds the distinction of being one of the more frequent performers of the national anthem for the Atlanta Brave's home games. If hard-hitting, Southern, Sunday morning singing style and dynamic versatility on signature traditional tunes like "Joy", "Come On In The Room" and "Sunday Morning Medley" have propelled the Georgia Mass Choir (GMC) to the forefront of the gospel choir scene inspiring crossover audiences, then it is projects like the newest release, "Tell It " that will keep the ministry soaring to higher heights. This anointed faith-filled musical ministry also is featured in Disney's major motion picture, The Preacher's Wife. Three of the choir's signature songs He's All Over Me, Joy and Hold On, Help is On the Way-are on the movie's soundtrack CD. Preacher's Wife star and recording superstar Whitney Houston leads choir selections. During the promotion of the movie, Rev. Milton Biggham and the Georgia Mass Choir performed in a ten-city concert tour with Whitney Houston. In addition, the choir made guest appearances on high-profile television programs such as: Saturday Night Live, Good Morning America, The Today Show, The Ebony Awards, the Dove Awards and The NAACP Image Awards. Daily News reporter Baird Jones reported in 1997 that during the filming of "Preacher's Wife", Whitney Houston and the Georgia Mass Choir would become so enraptured with their gospel numbers, they would sing right through director Penny Marshall's cries of "cut". Rev. Milton Biggham, explained, "We call that having church". Members of the Georgia Mass Choir have been "having church" with a brand of spirited intensity captured in African-American churches throughout the country since Rev. Biggham founded the Choir on January 29, 1983 in Macon, Georgia. Rev. Biggham says, "As a native Georgian, I knew after becoming a music producer at Savoy Records, the amount of untapped talent that was in Georgia. Founding the choir was my way of giving back to my native state."
